The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has dismissed a viral social media claim suggesting that a student received a payment of R630 434.44, describing the information as false and misleading.
NSFAS Responds To Viral Payment Claim
In an official statement, NSFAS confirmed that the image circulating online has been manipulated and appears to be AI-generated. The scheme emphasised that the alleged payment does not match any legitimate NSFAS transaction.
The organisation made it clear that no such payment has been made to any student.
Content Created For Social Media Attention
According to NSFAS, the content was likely created by the student for social media purposes, possibly to gain attention and engagement on digital platforms.
How NSFAS Payments Actually Work
NSFAS clarified that it does not pay large lump sums directly to students. Instead, funding is allocated to universities and colleges, which then distribute approved allowances to students based on official funding guidelines.
“These systems are governed by strict financial controls and oversight mechanisms,” NSFAS said.
No Security Breach Detected
The scheme reassured students and institutions that its systems remain secure, confirming that there has been no irregular payment or system breach linked to the viral claim.
Warning Against Misinformation
NSFAS warned that the spread of false or misleading information is taken seriously. The scheme stated that it may take legal action against individuals who intentionally create or share misinformation that damages its reputation.
