The Gauteng College of Nursing equips committed students with the necessary tools to enter into a rewarding career with the Gauteng Department of Health. Applications to join the college for the 2027 academic year are open for those who are interested in healthcare.

Gauteng College of Nursing: Student Nurse Intake 2027

Applications are now open to study towards a Diploma in Nursing in 2027 at the Gauteng College of Nursing. Successful applicants will be placed at one of the following campuses:

• Ann Latsky Campus
• Chris Hani Baragwanath Campus
• SG Lourens Campus
• Bonalesedi Campus

How to Apply

• All applications must be completed online via the GPG Professional Job Centre before or on 26 September – no late applications will be accepted.
• Register a profile on the system before applying.
• Upload all required documents online. Shortlisted applicants must present supporting documents at the selection centre.
• No emailed or hand-delivered applications will be accepted.

Eligibility Requirements

• Must be a South African citizen residing in Gauteng.
• Must hold one of the following: Senior Certificate, National Senior Certificate, currently in Grade 12, or a National Vocational Certificate in Primary Health.

Minimum Subject Requirements

Senior Certificate: English HG D/SG C, Biology HG D/SG C, Mathematics HG D/SG C, and an M-score of 17.
National Senior Certificate: English Level 4, Life Sciences Level 4, Mathematics Level 4 (or Maths Literacy Level 5), and APS of 27+ (Life Orientation counts half).
National Vocational Certificate: 50% in Fundamental Subjects (English FAL, Maths/Maths Literacy, Life Orientation) and 60% in Vocational Subjects (SA Health Care System, Public Health, Human Body and Mind, Community-Oriented Primary Care).
Current Grade 12 learners: Must meet the NSC requirements in their Grade 11 final results.

Competencies and Attributes

Applicants should demonstrate a passion for nursing, problem-solving ability, patience, compassion, strong communication skills, leadership qualities, flexibility, and the ability to remain calm under pressure. Computer literacy, study skills, and honesty are essential.

Selection Process

• All shortlisted applicants will undergo a compulsory psychometric assessment.
• Successful candidates will be required to complete medical surveillance, including a physical examination and verification of documentation.

Programme Requirements

Once accepted, successful applicants must:
• Sign an agreement with the Gauteng Department of Health.
• Attend lectures and complete Work Integrated Learning (WIL). This includes shifts at Gauteng public hospitals and clinics, which may take place on weekends, nights, and public holidays.

What Are The Requirements For The Qualification?

For an application to be successful, applicants need to:

  • Be a South African citizen residing in Gauteng
  • Have either a Senior Certificate (SC), a National Senior Certificate (NSC), a National Certificate Vocational (NC (V) ) Primary Health, or currently be in Grade 12
  • Have all necessary documentation both printed out and available to be uploaded online

Applicants’ minimum subject requirements are as follows:

  • If you have an SC – A Higher Grade (HG) D or Standard Grade (SG) C in English, Math and Biology
  • If you have an NSC – A Level 4 (50-59%) in English, Life Sciences, and Mathematics and a Level 5 (60-69%) in Math Lit., along with a minimum Admission Point Score (APS) of 27
  • If you have an NC (V) – Minimum 50% in Fundamental subjects and minimum 60% in Vocational subjects such as SA Healthcare system, Public Health, The Human Body and Mind and Community Oriented Primary Care.
  • If you are currently in matric – Grade 11 marks should meet the NSC requirements

The college prefers applicants with characteristics such as patience, problem-solving, organisation, friendliness, leadership, flexibility, calmness in crisis, etc.

  • In order to apply for the diploma in nursing, you will need to register an account and apply via the GPG Professional Job Centre. This is the only way you can apply as no hand-delivered or emailed applications will be accepted.
  • Enter your relevant information and upload the necessary documentation electronically. Only when you have been shortlisted by the college, should you bring physical versions of your supporting documentation to the selection centre.
  • Once your application is successful, you will be asked to sign an agreement with the Department of Health.
  • You will then be expected to attend lectures and engage in Work Integrated Learning, which will require you to work shifts at Gauteng hospitals and clinics during your studies.
